CWDM and DWDM technologies are the foundation of ultrahigh aggregate bandwith data transmission in metro and backbone applications. As the required capacity of metropolitan and network systems increases, DWDM systems will require closer channel spacing and therefore higher numbers of wavelengths or lasers. CWDM systems are becoming more increasingly deployed in cost sensitive high bandwidth applications. DWDM technologies will move beyond mere capacity aggregation in backbone transport to become the enabling technology of all-optical networking where wavelength provisioning and switching occur at the photonic layer thereby allowing light paths to traverse networks without conversion to electrical signals. These and other advances in architectures and routing protocols are converging such that all-optical infrastructures will evolve with mesh, ring and point-to-point topologies at the optical layer to support the needs of enterprise, metropolitan access and core networks.
